Cairo Tower – History, Architecture, and Secrets
Completed in 1961, the Cairo Tower was designed by the Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib. Its construction lasted from 1956 to 1961, a period marked by significant political and social changes in Egypt. At 187 meters high, the tower was, for many years after its completion, the tallest structure in Africa and remains one of the tallest buildings in Egypt today. The funding sources for the tower are surrounded by interesting rumors. It is widely believed that the project was financed by a $6 million donation from the US government, which Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser then used to build the tower as a gesture of defiance. Nasser allegedly saw this as an opportunity to turn what was meant as a bribe into a permanent monument in Cairo’s skyline.
