Hurghada Museum
This local history museum was conceived as the first of its kind in the Red Sea Governorate about 10 years ago. But political unrest, a number of other obstacles and, ultimately, Corona have repeatedly postponed the opening. In late 2018 / early 2019, construction finally began and the opening of the still unfinished museum could be celebrated with Prime Minister Madbuli on February 29, 2020.
Today, walking through a mall with several small shops, you can see about 2,000 artifacts on the top floor, which is chronologically divided into 5 time periods. You start with the era of the pharaohs and then move on to the Greek, Coptic, Islamic and modern era. At the entrance to the second floor stands a statue of Horus, carved out of black granite, showing the way.
Meridamun, daughter of Nefertari and Ramses II, was originally housed in a museum in Cairo. It was found in the Rameseum near Luxor in 1886 and now adorns the Hurghada Museum. Other exhibits include jewelry, palm-leaf shoes and clay pots.
Or artifacts from a ship that sank off the island of Sadan. To this day, it is not known exactly when this ship sank on the reefs, but it is believed that it must have been around 1740.
The treasure divers plundered it, but historians investigated it, and certain exhibits were found.
Among the exhibits are not large statues or coffins with mummies, but everyday objects of different ages.
Also worth mentioning is the reconstruction of the grave opening. You get the feeling that you are here.
At first, you can see the canopic jugs, each dedicated to a specific organ. There are inscriptions behind it.
The museum is located on the road leading to the center of Hurghada, next to the Steigenberger Al Dau Hotel. This museum is absolutely suitable for those who do not want to make long trips to Cairo or Luxor. But also for all those who want to make friends with the past of Egypt and when curiosity arises, nothing stands in the way of a trip to Cairo, Aswan or Luxor.
