Safaga Ghost Town or Umm al-Hawaitat is a city abandoned since about 1988. It is located 26 km from Safaga in a mountain basin belonging to Wadi Ghasus. It was built in the early 19th century for workers and their families who worked in phosphate mining. Even today, phosphates are mined and transported in the vicinity of Safaga. Among the buildings there is a small school, a hospital, places of worship and simple residential buildings.
There were also small supermarkets and a market. After the city was abandoned, the buildings fell into disrepair and only the foundations remained.
During our tour of the Ghost City Safaga Hurghada, we will also be able to see a small train, or at least its remains, which delivered phosphates to the coast for transportation.
