Hurghada vs Marsa Alam: which one is better for snorkeling and beaches? In short, Hurghada is better if you want variety: island boat trips, many excursion options, sandy resort beaches, restaurants and easy transfers. Marsa Alam is better if you want quiet, less crowded reefs, house reef snorkeling and the chance to see sea turtles and, with some luck, dugongs and dolphins in a calmer setting.
Both are on the Red Sea and both have warm, clear water, but the holiday feels very different. This guide compares reefs, beaches, wildlife, crowds, transfers, excursions and prices, using the real programs and “from” prices on our own price list, and ends with two 7-day sample plans so you can see what each base looks like in practice.

Snorkeling: Hurghada vs Marsa Alam
Snorkeling in Hurghada: boats, islands and choice
Hurghada is the best base for travellers who like to try different places. Most of the best-known spots are reached by boat: island days with beaches and reefs, coral gardens, dolphin trips and fast private speedboats. That means you can swim at a new reef almost every time you go out.
Popular choices on our program are Orange Bay, Paradise Island, Mahmya Island, Hula Hula and Sharm El Naga. Non-swimmers and families are well served too, with the Glass Bottom Boat and the Sindbad Submarine, which let you see corals without getting wet.
Good to know: Popular island trips can be busy because many operators go to the same places. A private speedboat or a private boat trip lets you choose your timing and avoid the biggest crowds.

Snorkeling in Marsa Alam: house reefs and wildlife
Marsa Alam is famous with divers and snorkelers who want a quieter sea. Many hotels sit right beside a house reef, so you can snorkel from the beach or pontoon at any time of day, without joining a boat. The south of the Egyptian Red Sea is also known for wildlife encounters.
The most famous spot is Abu Dabbab, a bay known for sea turtles grazing on seagrass and for occasional dugong sightings. Other popular programs include dolphin reef trips (such as Sataya) and visits to the Hamata and Qulaan islands. Wildlife is never guaranteed, so treat every sighting as a bonus.
Good to know: Marsa Alam is more spread out. Many snorkeling bays are a drive away from your hotel, so most guests combine hotel reef time with one or two organised trips.

Beaches: Hurghada vs Marsa Alam
Hurghada beaches
The Hurghada coast has a wide range: lively city beaches along Sheraton Road, polished lagoon-style beaches in El Gouna, and long sandy resort beaches in Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay. Many hotels offer sunbeds, beach bars, water sports and gentle entries that suit families with children. If a classic sandy beach holiday is your priority, Hurghada gives you more choice.
See where each area fits in our guide Where to Stay in Hurghada and our excursion pages for Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and El Gouna.
Marsa Alam beaches
Beaches around Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib are generally quieter and more remote. Many are edged by coral reef, and hotels often use pontoons or lagoons to give access to deeper water. The scenery is beautiful and peaceful, but you will find fewer long, shallow sandy stretches than in the main Hurghada resorts. If you have small children or want a very gentle entry, check each hotel’s beach before booking.

Beyond the sea: Luxor, Cairo, Aswan and the desert
Most guests do not want to spend every day in the water. Here is how the two bases compare for culture and adventure.
As a rule, Marsa Alam is closer to Edfu, Aswan and Luxor, while Hurghada is better placed for Cairo and the Red Sea islands. Our Egypt round trips and all excursions pages show every option.
Airports, transfers and crowds
Hurghada Airport has many flights and is close to the resorts, so transfers are short and cheap. Our private transfer prices start from 20 € to the city and 25 € to Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and El Gouna, per vehicle. Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib are served by their own airport, but flight choice is smaller and the coast is far more spread out. If you arrive at Hurghada Airport and stay in Marsa Alam, our transfer is listed from 90 € per vehicle to Marsa Alam / Port Ghalib (north) and from 110 € to the south hotels, with a drive of about three hours.
On crowds: Hurghada is the busier destination, with more hotels, more boats and more evening life. Marsa Alam is calmer and more remote, which many snorkelers love, but it also means fewer restaurants and less to do outside your hotel. See our airport transfer page for all prices.
