Hurghada vs Sharm El SheikhBeaches, diving, excursionsCairo & Luxor tripsPrices & 7-day plans

Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh: which Red Sea resort should you choose? In short, Hurghada offers more sandy beaches, easy day trips by road to Luxor and Cairo, and the widest choice of boat trips and desert safaris. Sharm El Sheikh, at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is the stronger pick for reef-wall diving, Ras Mohammed National Park and trips to Mount Sinai and St. Catherine’s Monastery.

Both resorts have warm water, year-round sun and excellent hotels, but the experience is different. This guide compares beaches, diving and snorkeling, excursions, flights, nightlife and prices, using the real programs and “from” prices on our own price list, and finishes with two 7-day sample plans so you can picture each holiday.

Beaches: Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh

Hurghada beaches

The Hurghada coast is long and varied. You will find lively city beaches near Sheraton Road, polished lagoons in El Gouna, and long sandy stretches in Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay. Many hotels have gentle sandy entries, which makes the area easy for families and for anyone who wants a classic beach holiday.

See which area suits you in our guide to where to stay in Hurghada, or browse Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and El Gouna excursions.

Sharm El Sheikh beaches

Sharm El Sheikh is known for dramatic scenery: desert mountains falling into very blue water. Many hotel beaches are edged by coral reef and use pontoons to reach deeper water, so you can snorkel right in front of the hotel. Fully sandy, shallow beaches are less common than in the main Hurghada resorts, so check each hotel’s beach entry if you travel with small children. Resort areas such as Naama Bay add a lively promenade with restaurants and nightlife.

Beach verdict
Hurghada wins for sandy family beaches and variety. Sharm El Sheikh wins for reef-in-front-of-your-hotel snorkeling and dramatic mountain scenery.

Diving and snorkeling: Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm El Sheikh: reef walls and Ras Mohammed

Experienced divers often rank Sharm El Sheikh among the best places in the Red Sea. The area is famous for steep reef walls, strong marine life and the protected waters of Ras Mohammed National Park. The Straits of Tiran are another well-known destination, and longer trips reach famous wrecks. Some sites have currents, so they suit certified divers rather than beginners.

Hurghada: variety for every level

Hurghada offers a wide mix of reefs, islands and wrecks within reach of the coast, so it works well for beginners, families and mixed groups. It is also the more convenient base if some people in your group dive and others prefer to snorkel or relax on a boat. For first-timers, our Discover Scuba Diving program includes two guided dives with full equipment, lunch and hotel transfer, and no diving licence is needed (70 € per person).

Seeing Cairo and Luxor from each resort

This is one of the biggest practical differences. From Hurghada you can reach Luxor and Cairo by private car, which keeps prices lower, or by domestic flight, which saves time. From Sharm El Sheikh, the Nile Valley sights are practical only by plane, so those excursions cost more. That is why many guests who want to see the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Valley of the Kings pick Hurghada as their base.

Sharm El Sheikh

Our Hurghada Luxor day trip includes the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Hatshepsut Temple, the Colossi of Memnon and a Nile boat trip, with lunch. For longer plans, see our Egypt round trips, including the 10-day round trip with a beach holiday.

Atmosphere, nightlife and families

Hurghada is a real city with a long coast, so you can choose between a quiet resort strip, a lagoon town like El Gouna or a lively centre with markets, restaurants and a marina. Sharm El Sheikh is more resort-focused and compact, with the Naama Bay promenade and a strong evening scene concentrated in a few areas. Both suit couples and families, but Hurghada generally has more beach space, more budget choices and more excursions from one base.

Good to know: Sharm El Sheikh is in the Sinai Peninsula. Check the latest official travel advice before booking, and read our guide to Hurghada vs Marsa Alam if you are also considering the quieter south.
